Corneal opacification is a principal cause of blindness in Ghana contributing 11.2% (24 000 people) of the national estimate. Corneal transplant surgery is well known to offer restoration of sight to people blind from corneal opacities. The country has trained surgeons who are ready to offer their services, but the country lacks the law on organ/tissue donations, leading to the current state of no eye bank in Ghana for successful corneal transplants.
The cornea working group of the Ophthalmological Society of Ghana (OSG) with the support of hcpcureblindness sightLife international has been working assiduously for the past one year to get the law for organ and tissue donation passed by the government to enable the establishment of a functioning eye bank in Ghana.
Eye donation means donating the eyes of a person after death for transplantation with the family consent.
Approximately 24,000 of the blind population of our country are waiting for
corneal transplantation
One eye donation can give sight to two corneal blind persons.
